Alcohol and mental health
Alcohol can have a massive impact on our bodies, our lives and those we love, even without us realising it.
While alcohol is often associated with having a good time, it can negatively affect our mental wellbeing.
It’s a depressant substance. This means it can disrupt the chemical balance in our brains, affecting our thoughts, feelings and actions – and sometimes our long-term mental health.
Sometimes we can use alcohol as a ‘stress reliever’ – how many times have you felt like you ‘needed a drink’ after a stressful day? Alcohol can actually make it harder to deal with stress, and can worsen depression and anxiety.
Managing your drinking and getting the right support are really important for both your mental and physical health.
If you need some support to control or stop your drinking – or if you’re worried about someone else’s drinking – there’s help available and there’s no shame in seeking it. We Are With You can help you and your loved ones.
