The latest health guidance suggests that regular exercise can be a really effective treatment for some people living with with anxiety or mild depression.
Better Health NS have teamed up with Mental Health Integrated Network Team (MINT) to offer weekly gentle exercise sessions to help residents move more to feel better.
When: Every Tuesday from 8th October (welcome session) until 17th December (final session)
Session timings: Sessions start at 1pm and finish at 2 pm – after welcoming everyone, we will do 45 minutes of gentle movement and have 10 minutes to wrap up.
Who can come with me? MINT team staff members are very welcome to attend and take part in the session to support their service users – everyone attending will need to bring trainers and join in!
How much? FREE!
What do I need to wear and bring? Wear comfortable clothing for moving in & trainers, also a water bottle. Everything else will be provided.
How to I sign up? Contact your MINT worker to find out more.
The first session on Tuesday 08/10/2024 is a Welcome Session (and includes a short taster of fitness yoga)
At this session, you will:
- Meet Caroline, Julie & Stacey who are running these sessions
- Meet others from Weston area who have similar health concerns
- Be supported to complete some questionnaires about how active you are now, and any health concerns you have
- Be supported to write a postcard to your ‘future self’ to say what you want to achieve during the course (postcard to be handed back to staff for safe-keeping : this will be posted back to you at the end of December as a reminder of what you wanted to achieve).
What activities will we do?
These sessions are an opportunity to try out different types of gentle exercise, including
- Try ‘Fitness’ yoga (no spiritual element to this activity) includes a guided relaxation at the end of the activity
- Learn fun dance routines to different popular songs
- Try out ‘resistance bands’ with low-impact exercises to improve balance, strength, and flexibility over time.
- Listen to a guided visualisation for ‘grounding’ and anxiety relief (these are offered during each session and are optional to take part in)
- What else? We will find out from the group what types of movement they want to try, and book these in over the course of the sessions.
As a thank you for coming, we will be running an Asda Vouchers ‘lottery’ – 1 ticket for each session you attend goes in the hat – draw is at the final session.
We can also offer the Get Active pass (5 free & 5 half price gym / swim sessions) or Go4Free Pass, (5 free & 5 half price fitness classes).
Also up for grabs are pedometers and water bottles.
